Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan and is situated in the north west part of Punjab Province in the Potohar Plateau at crossroads of Punjab and NWFP. It is 14 Km Nort/West of Rawalpindi District. The modern capital Islamabad and the ancient Gakhar city of Rawalpindi stand side by side, showing rich values of the country’s past and present.

At the time of independance of Pakistan, Karachi was the capital of the country. It was strongly felt the need of new permanent capital. A comission was constituated in 1958 who was supposed to recommend a suitable location for building the new capital. After a lot of effort & research, comission finaly recommended the location adjacent to Rawalpindi.

The city is very green, with much afforestation of what was formerly scrub forest and open ground. The city's pleasant climate has enabled the introduction of many exotic plants into the area. There is also much wildlife in the north in the Margalla hills, which have been turned into a national park.
